Sylvia Njenga- Gichia is a Freelance photographer currently based in Nairobi, Kenya. She moved back from the US 3 years ago, where she was a pro photographer providing a variety of local, national and international clients with creative photography of consistent, superior quality. Sylvia turned her passion for photography into a full time professional career 7 years ago, and has had her work published in a number of different publications.

Sylvia has ‘a passion for issues and believes that through her photography she is being a 'voice' for the voiceless’ If she had the time, she would prefer to shoot film, she says,

“It has a character that digital still can't match, but digital is much more convenient for all involved, it's free and quicker to produce. Communication is probably the most important skill to have in this job, but having patience and the ability to be creative in sometimes fraught situations is also vital. There are always positives and negatives to every job, Photography can take you to unusual places and you will almost certainly meet a lot of interesting people through it, but at the same time it is easy to be undervalued by others who might not understand the hard work that goes into it. I satisfy my artistic whims with photography taken for its own sake -- as an item of beauty and inspiration."

Sylvia shoots in a variety of styles, from traditional to photojournalistic. She specializes in street photography, portraits and scenery. Her photographs offer us segments of stories that encourage us to imagine for ourselves the missing passages beyond the edges of the frame. Often shot from an unexpected angle and unusually lit, the audience is positioned very much as voyeurs. Sylvia demands more than simply a ‘pretty picture’.

More of Sylvia’s work may be viewed at her Studio at Kuona Trust.
